Bodybuilding is a sport that seems to encourage excess by design. In order to achieve a Herculean physique many of them partake in a number of strange rituals such as extreme diets, ingesting dangerous steroids and undergoing risky surgeries. The obsession that some of sport’s most well-known participants have exhibited reveals that there is a dark side that is hard to come back from. Here’s a list of 5 Bodybuilders Who Took It Too Far! Let’s begin!
5 Moustafa Ismail
Moustafa Ismail is a bodybuilder dedicated to pumping one specific muscle to massive proportions. He currently holds the Guinness record for the world’s largest upper arm circumference. His massive pythons measure at an astounding 31 inches! For reference, that’s the waist size of an average male! He reached these ridiculous results on a strict regiment of extreme exercise and a diet that includes eating 7 pounds of protein a day, Ismail’s biggest complaint is having difficulty purchasing shirts since his tremendous arm transformation. We could see that being an issue when you’re a real life Popeye.
4 Gordon Kimbrough
Gordon Kimbrough was described by family and friends to be a gentle spirit before using anabolic steroids and human growth hormone. Many bodybuilders use these dangerous aids to help make drastic changes to their physique in a short period of time. Despite the physical benefits of the products, the mental toll they inflict is often much greater. Kimbrough murdered his fiance’ in a fit of rage, believing she had met another man. He was later found by police at the scene attempting to commit suicide by injecting Lysol into his neck. Steroids, the modern potion for Jekyll and Hyde.
3 Gregg Valentino
Gregg Valentino was formerly known for having the largest biceps in the world. In order to maintain his title, he began using an aid called Synthol. Synthol is a synthetic oil that is injected directly into the muscles to inflate them. Although the results often have a grotesque and unnatural appearance, it’s commonly used in the bodybuilding world. Valentino used it until a pus-leaking hematoma grew on his arm. He attempted to drain the abscess himself with a syringe which caused his bicep to burst like a water balloon. We’re sure those weren’t the explosive results he expected.
2 Chad Brothers
The tale of Chad Brothers is truly terrifying. During a workout at a Gold’s Gym in New York, Brothers tripped and fell off the elliptical. This sent him into a PCP and steroid fueled rage. He couldn’t be contained as he tore through the gym tossing heavy gym equipment around like Fisher-Price playsets and threatening other gym-goers. The entire Hulk-style rampage was caught on the gym’s surveillance cameras. When the police arrived, the raging man had to be tased twice before he was brought down. Chad Brothers later passed out and died in a medical bed. Along with the chronic low life expectancy of many roided and ripped professional wrestlers, Chad’s tale of insane death serves as an excellent story to deter steroid use.
1 Andreas Munzer
Andreas Munzer was a legendary bodybuilder that hailed from Austria and idolized Arnold Schwarzenegger. He was renowned for his low body fat, but the methods to achieve his results were fatal. Munzer ingested muscle building substances and diuretics in large amounts daily. He was rushed to the operating table after complaining of stomach pains. He died a couple of days after surgery, his autopsy showed a liver full of ping pong ball sized tumors, an enlarged heart and trace amounts of 20 drugs. Schwarzenegger sent a wreath to his funeral in-scripted as a last greeting to a friend.
