Melanin is an interesting hetero-polymer. It absorbs light with incredible efficiency, which is why people with darker skin are less susceptible to the effects of the sun than those with lighter skin. Diseases, disorders or mutations can lead to some interesting patterns and colors. The following people are some that stand out the most. On that note, we’ve got the rundown on 5 people with incredibly unique skin color. Let’s begin!
5. Khoudia Diop
Khoudia’s skin color is mesmerizing, but she was viciously bullied as a child in Senegal. Fortunately, she didn’t let it get to her. She moved to Paris when she was 15, with everything getting better from there. After she arrived in Paris she was approached by people telling her that she should try modelling and she did just that. Khoudia has grown into an incredible model and a fantastic person. Her trials growing up have led her to take a stand against bullying everywhere. In 2016 she moved to New York to attend college. Her Instagram account is incredibly popular and she has modeled for some very big names. Given the fact that she is so young, we expect to see a lot more of Khoudia in the future.
4. Darnell Swallow
Darnell made his debut as a housemate on the Big Brother UK TV show. His laid-back nature and fun-loving antics made him an immediate hit. It turns out that he was also convicted in the North Dakota for selling weed and violating probation. His checkered past hasn’t stopped him from pushing forward, however. After leaving the Big Brother house, Darnell went on to have a short-lived career as a producer. He worked on a horror movie called The Witness in 2013, which didn’t turn many heads. He is now based in London, England and describes himself as a musician, photographer, and dancer, which is quite an impressive resume considering his humble beginnings back in the US.
3. Winnie Harlow
When Winnie was only four years old, a white spot appeared on her stomach and mysteriously began to grow. She found out later that she had a rare condition known as vitiligo. This strange disease causes the skin to lose its pigment and is considered to be long-term, with most cases continuing to persist a lifetime. Sometime the hair on affected areas also turns white. Most people with her condition would never have dreamed of becoming a model, but Winnie isn’t most people. The condition usually has a deep psychological impact on those affected, even though it is thought that 1 in 100 people have the condition in some way. Winnie became an overnight celebrity when she joined the cast of America’s Next Top Model, picking up a number of lucrative contracts since.
2. Ralph Souffrant
This model was born in Haiti and moved to New York when he was a child. He was officially discovered during Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 3. As soon as he stepped onto the runway it was clear that he was destined for modeling greatness. Not only does his complexion set him apart, displaying an intense pattern of magnificent freckles, but his overall presence is undeniable. Photographer Aaron Taylor approached Ralph back in 2015 in Brooklyn. He befriended Ralph, created an Instagram page for him, and kick-started his modelling career. As a kid, Ralph, who suffers from condition similar to vitiligo, was bullied and teased for his looks, leading him to work out and exercise to overcome his insecurities. All his hard work has paid off and Ralph is now well on his way to a fantastic modelling career.
1. DJ Jeffrey Jewell
Last, but not least, we have albino DJ-turned-model, Jeffrey Jewell. Jewell has turned some heads in the UK’s club scene with his unique fusion sounds. Even more impressive, he was recently asked to be the star of Smirnoff’s new ‘We’re Open’ campaign, which is a good call because this guy has a lot of character. The campaign sent him to Johannesburg, South Africa to film their ad in a local club. He admitted that he had reservations, given his complexion, but put forth an amazing performance. The shoot was a success and the ad looks like a winner. With his loud hair, unique complexion, and catchy club beats, we hope to see a lot more of this up-and-coming celebrity in the near future.
